I was fascinated by Alfred McCoy, ever since reading his book The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia when it first came out in 1972. To this day, the book is a standard text for anyone interested in the development of the drug trade in Asia. Fortunately for me, he spent some time in Australia and I interviewed him in his offices at UNSW. He was a translucently intelligent, very charming man and I am very pleased to have met him.
This interview by no means does him justice.
